About

In 1950, in the working-class neighborhoods of Kingston, a group of men with no studio, no record label, and almost no resources invented a new way to produce and experience music. This invention is called the sound system.

Understanding how it came to be means understanding how this culture was born, why it took root in Jamaica, and how it became a global benchmark: that is ZION NOIZ’s mission.

SUNJAHTA KEÏTA

Sunjahta Keïta is a philosophy teacher and holds a degree in sociology. With ZION NOIZ, he’s developing an independent platform focus on sound system history and roots culture.

ZION NOIZ takes shapes through research articles, public talk and curated music selections rooted in Roots & Culture tradition. The project will also expand to include an audiovisual production: Number One Sound, a ten-episode illustrated docudrama dedicated to the rise of the Jamaican sound system.

At the heart of this work are two questions:

Why did sound system culture become so popular so quickly ?

How did a culture that emerged under conditions of extreme marginalization become a global benchmark that continues to influence music today?
